For winter fun, look just up the road to Sun Valley

    by Greenbelt Magazine Staff

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway or a fun midweek break, turn east to Sun Valley, just two hours from Boise. We asked Sun Valley Resort’s communications director Kelli Lusk to tell us about what’s new and fun for families at the resort this year.

What family activities does Sun Valley Resort offer?

We have a lot of activities for the kids! We were ranked #1 in the SKI Magazine’s annual readers’ poll for 2016 for being kid-friendly. Some of the activities we offer for our guests include skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing (both classic and skate), snowshoeing, horseback riding, sleigh and wagon rides, swimming, mountain biking, hiking, bowling, movies, shooting, the state-of-the-art fitness center and tennis.

What kinds of accommodations are available?

The lodging at Sun Valley includes guest suites, apartments, condos – conveniently located in the Sun Valley Village and within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, the bowling alley, Opera House (showing movies daily), ice skating, the Spa, pools and the fitness center. The beautifully renovated Sun Valley Lodge includes 114 rooms with 65 of them having fireplaces. The Lodge boasts our five celebrity guest suites, named and fashioned after iconic guests who have stayed or been with us at the resort: Marilyn Monroe, Ernest Hemingway, Clint Eastwood, Averell Harriman, Sonia Henie. Complimentary shuttles are also available to/from the Friedmann Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey and also to and from town, so guests can enjoy their stay without needing to worry about ground transport once they arrive here.

What about lessons or daycare for the kids?

We offer a full array of lessons – skiing, snowboarding, ice skating. We also offer daycare.
The Sun Valley SnowSports school offers group and private lessons for kids – from LittleSpuds to Freeride. Here are some highlights:

    Youth and Children’s Specialty

    • Freeride (6-17 years old)
    • Spuds Alpine & Snowboard (Kindergarten thru 6th Grade)
    • LittleSpuds (2 years old to Kindergarten)

Sun Valley also has a full offering of daycare services and kids’ playrooms on-site, along with the Concierge providing contacts for local babysitters for those wishing to have an individual babysitter or times outside of our daycare hours. Lusk encourages potential visitors to check the resort’s website often for special packages and deals (hint: Valentine’s Day!). Whether it’s a relaxing day at the spa or an invigorating run down the slopes, Sun Valley has a variety of options for winter fun.
